ABOUT RMAI

The Rural Marketing Association of India (RMAI) is India’s leading industry body dedicated to strengthening the rural, semi-urban and emerging-market marketing ecosystem.

Established in 2005, RMAI has consistently worked to build a more informed, credible and effective rural marketing industry. The association serves as a common platform for corporates, agencies, development organizations, public-sector stakeholders, technology platforms, media companies, research firms and rural specialists to collaborate, exchange knowledge and shape best practices for engaging Bharat.

RMAI’s role has evolved with the changing market. Rural India is no longer defined only by geography. Technology adoption, improved infrastructure, rising incomes, digital access, mobility, education and aspiration are blurring the lines between rural, semi-urban and small-town markets. These emerging markets are now central to India’s growth story and increasingly important to corporate, developmental and public-sector strategies.

In this dynamic landscape, RMAI helps the industry move beyond conventional rural outreach towards more nuanced, data-led, inclusive and scalable engagement models.

India’s Emerging Market Opportunity

India’s rural and emerging markets represent one of the largest growth opportunities in the world. A significant share of India’s population continues to live in rural and semi-urban regions, and these markets contribute substantially to national consumption across FMCG, durables, agriculture, mobility, financial services, healthcare, education, telecom and digital services.

Today, these markets are being reshaped by:

• Expanding Digital and Mobile Access
• Greater Exposure to Brands, Content and Commerce
• Improved Road, Logistics and Retail Infrastructure
• Rising Aspirations Among Youth and Women
• Growth of Small-Town and Rural Entrepreneurship
• Stronger Linkages Between Villages, Mandis, Towns and Regional Trade Hubs
• Increasing Relevance of Data, Technology, Fintech, ONDC, AI and Assisted Commerce

The opportunity is no longer only about reaching rural consumers. It is about understanding emerging consumers, building trust, enabling access, creating relevance, improving distribution, measuring impact and supporting inclusive growth.
